How to create a professional page in minutes with Google Sites
Google has it all. In addition to search engine, it has a video portal (YouTube), a geographic atlas (Maps), an office suite (Drive), an email client (Gmail), a space to share your photos, an App store Play) …
With Google you can even launch a blog in seconds thanks to Blogger. You enter, register, set up a template and you will only have to create content. Barely requires maintenance.
On the other hand, if you were a G Suite customer, before Google Apps, in addition to having Drive space, Gmail email, calendars and other services focused on the company, you could create the website of your business using Google Sites.
Private users, or those who did not want a paid subscription to G Suite, to set up a website with Google should go to Blogger or to the free space that Drive offers. But for several years now it is possible to use Google Sites for free and free.
What is Google Sites
Google Sites, like Gmail or Drive, acts as a tool to create web pages from scratch and storage service generated web page.
For years it has been linked to G Suite, before Google Apps, hence it is not as popular as Blogger. In addition, it has not been widely advertised outside of G Suite or the business arena.
If you use Google Sites for free, the created website supports a maximum of 100 MB in size and attachments up to 20 MB each. If you need more space, you can turn to related services like Google Photos, YouTube or Google Drive itself.
And if you want all the content of your website in one place, you can opt for G Suite and its multiple payment subscriptions that will give you a minimum of 10 GB of space. What’s more, there are accounts for schools with up to 100 GB of space.
How can I create a website in Google Sites
From Drive you can create a new website with Sites. Simply go to the main page of your space in Drive and from New> More select Google Sites. The easiest option is from the official link.
Its operation is similar to other Google tools like Drive (Documents, Sheets, Presentations …). You click on the + symbol and the tool to create your web page will open.
His style is reminiscent of the design of presentations, with two main spaces: the page itself, shown as it will be published, and a right sidebar with everything you need.
Google Sites allows you to include text, images and links without programming. The same goes for more complex elements such as YouTube videos, maps of Google Maps or Google Drive documents that you can integrate comfortably. This includes spreadsheets, forms, and graphics. In the case of images, as in Drive, you can use your own photographs or search them in Google or in LIFE.
From the Pages tab you can create pages, which will be automatically displayed in the top menu of the main page.
On the other hand, Google Sites has its own selection of templates with which to customize the look of your web page, as with similar services like Blogger or WordPress. In addition, each theme includes several versions altering the color scheme.
Another feature of Google Sites, Drive’s heritage, is the ability to work with more people on the website. To the left of the Publish button there is an icon to add new users. You can send them a link or an email.
Precisely, when the page is finished, you can publish it through the corresponding button. Optionally, you can allow it to be indexed on Google or not. In addition, before publishing it you can see how it will be on a normal screen, a tablet or a mobile with the Preview (eye icon to the left of Publish).
Later you will be able to manage that and other web pages that you create from the main page of Google Sites.
Advantages and disadvantages
As we have seen, Google Sites has many advantages. The first is its ease of use, adding elements without programming.
Secondly, you create the page and publish it directly, without having to upload it to your own web hosting.
Another advantage has to do with the Google ecosystem. If you’re going to include YouTube or Drive content to your website, half of the work is already done. Little more you have to do. What’s more, Google Sites allows you to track visits to your website by integrating Google Analytics without having to include the code corresponding to the web. Google takes care of everything.
And the drawbacks? Obviously, not everything is perfect in Sites. For starters, the free space available is limited, 100 MB, when we are accustomed to the 15 GB Google Drive, also free. If you want more, you have to go through the box.
Another disadvantage has to do with the nature of Sites, and is that the wizard is focused on users with little programming knowledge, so the customization options are limited.
In any case, Google Sites serves its purpose: to create a fully functional website within minutes.
